Here is what you need to understand when you want to learn how to cook.

I think that when someone is afraid or doesn't want to learn how to cook it's because it can sometimes seem so difficult and/or boring when really it can be so simple and very enjoyable. I have always enjoyed cooking and baking so for me it has always been a positive experience, even when I really screw something up. Here are a few key things to remember if you are stuck and don't know where to begin:

#1 Knowing the basics makes things easier than you think - Ditch the boxed mac and cheese, ramen noodles, and canned soup. Making alternatives to these, homemade of course, is so much easier, tastier, and healthier. Once you know the basics making your own homemade mac and cheese or fries is going to be your go to choice.

#2 Don't stress about following instructions and measurements - I think this is one thing I would stress the most. A lot of frustration comes from trying to exactly follow measurements and instructions and failing, so once you get more educated and know how to use what and how in your cooking, you will be able to make it your own and you will just know how its done.

#3 Don't be so serious, relax and have fun with it - When you start cooking, it is always most fun to do it with someone else or a group of friends. Not only can you gain tips and tricks from others, but mess-ups are made to be more humorous and aren't as big of a deal. This also makes for really fun nights with friends and if it turns out good, you've got a delicious treat out of it.

At the end of the day, cooking shouldn't be viewed as a chore and it shouldn't be associated with being hard or boring. Keeping these things in mind should make the activity a lot easier and more enjoyable.

You're right! I love my homemade mac and cheese better than the box. But I do like to follow recipes to the T. I am not good at improvising yet!

Yes, I totally get it. For some, its preferred to follow exact recipes, whatever works for you! Thank you so much for the feedback! 😊

Cooking without being strict on measurements and ingredients is also a good way to make some traditional dishes your own. But of course this isn't the same for baking. I remember trying to substitute one ingredient for cupcakes I was baking and it totally didn't work out for me like it would have if I were cooking instead, not sure why its a problem for baking and not cooking 🤔

Thank you for your comment! I absolutely agree with you, when cooking, do whatever feels right for that dish to your taste but when it comes to baking, the exact measurements are your best bet.

Thank you for sharing this information! It can be hard to teach yourself how to cook and knowing the basics such as boiling water, frying an egg, grilling chicken can help you more than you think. Sometimes following recipes aren't for everyone and winging it can result in a better dish. Improvising is similar to cooking. Again, great post and thank you for sharing some basic cooking knowledge.

I think it is important to learn to go with the flow when it comes to cooking. Many people are so focused on following the recipe that the flavor suddenly becomes unimportant. As a young adult, I definitely need to learn how to cook better for myself. Your blog has helped me realize it might not be so hard! Thank you for these tips.

I definitely enjoyed reading your blog because it is so true. Cooking is not only a healthier way to eat food, but in the process of it you have fun doing it. Of course everyone messes up here and there, but you learn from your mistakes to make an even better meal next time. What is better than making a five course meal yourself? Nothing, because you know that you did it. Great job Nicole!
